Pearls are grown, not mined. They are soft — 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale — and their surface is nacre, which is dissolved by acid.
Looking after it
Put pearls on last, after perfume and hairspray, and take them off first. Wipe with a damp cloth, never in an ultrasonic cleaner.
