Gold Vermeil Explained: Thick Gold Over Silver

Vermeil is a thick layer of solid gold over sterling silver. To be called vermeil the gold must be at least 2.5 microns deep and at least 9 carat. That is many times thicker than ordinary gold plating, which is why it lasts years rather than months.
How to read the mark
Look for the silver mark 925, because the body of the piece is sterling silver. The mark is struck by an independent assay office, not by the maker, so it is the one part of a piece of jewellery you do not have to take on trust.
Living with it
Treat it as gold that can be worn through. Keep it away from perfume and cleaning products, wipe it after wearing, and it will hold its colour for years.
Who it suits
It gives the weight and look of gold at a fraction of the price, and it is the honest way to wear gold on a budget.
What we make in gold vermeil
There are 8 pieces in gold vermeil in the shop at the moment, from £48 to £372. A few of them are below; the rest are in the gold vermeil section.
How we make and mark it
Every piece here is made for ONLYWAY JEWELRY in London and, where the law requires it, hallmarked at the London Assay Office. The hallmark is not decoration: it is an independent test of the metal, struck by an assay office rather than by the maker. What the marks mean.
